Designed with stitch braids in mind, the tool is actually more versatile than that. According to the website, it can also be used for cornrows, box braids and even a slew of other hairstyles. Its ring design is easy to put on and take off while it provides precision for your braids. This is the perfect gift for a girl who loves to style her own hair or someone who is just getting started.
The kit comes with two of the braid tools as well as kanekalon hair, which is a higher-quality synthetic hair that’s made to mimic human hair. “It’s smoother, softer and less irritating than other synthetic braiding hair, and it also has a more natural feel to it,” Shanna Alexander tells Cosmopolitan. “Kanekalon is a great choice for most braiding styles because it creates a look that replicates your own strands and helps to give you the best results.”
Byrd was inspired by her mother to design the tool after she watched her mom do her hair using an ordinary finger comb. Her invention won her the Next Big Idea competition at Mercer Innovation Center and now sells for about $10 on AB Glitz, the website she started when she was still in high school. It promises to cut down the time it takes to do box braids and other stitch hairstyles by 35%.
