For years, Dyson has been known for its vacuum innovations, but in recent months it’s taken beauty to the next level with its line of blow-dryers and more versatile hair stylers. When the brand first launched its multi-tasking Supersonic hair dryer in 2016, it was met with a wave of rave reviews from influencers and beauty editors, and an equally massive waitlist for people ready to shell out $549 on a styling tool that promised to dry and style their strands with little to no heat damage. Two years later, the company took things a step further with the release of the multi-styler Airwrap Complete, an all-in-one hair tool that boasts new and redesigned attachments for a variety of styles and hair types—without using extreme heat.
The tool works on the premise of “the Coanda effect,” which happens when a jet of air hits a surface and stays attached even when the source of the stream curves away from the surface. The Airwrap Complete is designed to use that same technology with a twist-off locking system that allows you to easily attach and lock each of the different attachments to achieve your desired look. Each of the new and redesigned attachments is powered by a powerful Dyson V9 motor, which helps to set it apart from a typical blow-dryer or styling iron.
While the multi-styler isn’t exactly beginner-friendly (it takes some time and patience to learn how to get the most out of it), the brand says its reengineered attachments are up to 58% faster1 than traditional curling tools for quicker styling without any heat damage. The tools also promise to keep your hair stronger while creating a look that lasts up to 10 times longer than regular blowouts.
To use the curling attachments, you start with nearly dry and detangled strands that have been sectioned into small chunks. Grab a chunk and position it on the barrel, then use your fingers to separate the curls, or a wide-tooth comb for a more voluminous finish. The tools also come with a cool blast setting that can be used to help set your style.
You can also use the wavy attachment to create beachy, loose waves by twirling your strands around the wand and holding them in place while the tool uses its cooling setting. It’s also great for creating Farrah Fawcett-esque bangs by positioning the wand close to your head and letting it whirl your strands into classic bombshell waves.
The volumizing brush attachment is another great way to get voluminous, bouncy locks with the multi-styler. Rather than a rounded brush, the volumizing brush has a flat and ellipsoid shape that makes it easy to coax loose, voluminous waves into your strands. It can also be used to get a full-bodied bob or curtain bangs by positioning the tool near your roots and letting it curl out toward the end of your hair for a face-framing, ’90s-style look.
Reviewed’s beauty editor Kaitlin Clark has been testing the Dyson Airwrap for a few weeks now, and says it’s “the best hair tool I’ve ever tried.” The only downside is that the tools aren’t cheap, but they’re a worthy investment if you love to have voluminous, bouncy locks.
